The first meeting of the reconvened Ukrainian Oscar committee established by the Association of Producers of Ukraine took place at Kinotur company (Kinotur Digital Intermediate Lab) on September, 22.
The Committee met to nominate a Ukrainian film for the Oscar Award of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (USA) in the «Foreign language film» nomination, but decided not to nominate any film for the Award this year.
Most of films did not meet the requirements of the American Academy selection rules and other films decided to withdraw from the contest.
The Committee proposed to participate in the contest for the Oscar nomination to «Anna, Volga, Rock-n-Roll» directed by Kostyantyn Konovalov, «Dnipro» directed by Oleksandr Shapiro, a short films’ almanac «Asshole. Arabesque», «Love and the full stop» directed by Valery Yambursky, «Innocent Saturday» directed by Aleksandr Mindadze.
For this purpose, Kinotur provided the Committee members with its cinema hall to watch the films-nominees.
The Ukrainian Oscar committee has also approved its membership, which includes People’s Artist of Ukraine, actor Bogdan Stupka, People’s Artist of Ukraine, actress Ada Rogovtseva, People’s Artist of Ukraine, filmmaker Oleg Fialko, twice sci-tech Academy Awards Winner Anatoliy Kokush, chairman of the National Union of Cinematographers Sergiy Trymbach, author and screenwriter Andriy Kurkov, film critic and the presenter of the «Argument Kino» television show Volodymyr Voitenko, President of the Association of Producers of Ukraine Oleksandr Sierkov, producer Dmytro Kolesnykov, producer and screenwriter Igor Savichenko and director Sergiy Masloboishchikov.
People’s Artist of Ukraine, filmmaker Oleg Fialko was elected as the Committee’s Chairman.
Before the Ukrainian Oscar committee has nominated three films for the Oscar Award in the «Foreign language film» nomination: «Mamay» directed by Oles Sanin in 2003, «Aurora» directed by Oksana Bayrak in 2006 and «Illusion of fear» directed by Alexander Kiriyenko in 2009.
Since 2011 the Ukrainian Oscar committee starts working permanently. Between film nominations the Committee will deal with public and educational activities: round tables, seminars and conferences on Ukraine’s participation in film selection for the Oscar Awards, best foreign films winners to be shown, consulting filmmakers.
